The UK’s hosting of the 2027 G20 Summit presents a specific and time-limited opportunity to embed information integrity in the international economic governance agenda, and this Media20 brief makes the strategic case for doing so. The framing is deliberately broad — connecting information integrity to economic resilience and national security rather than limiting it to press freedom or counter-disinformation — which reflects a realistic assessment of what arguments carry weight in a G20 context. Building on the 2025 Johannesburg Declaration gives the brief a multilateral anchor rather than positioning it as a UK-only priority.
The two headline proposals — naming information integrity as a formal G20 priority and creating a G20 Working Group on Fair AI and Media Governance — are achievable within G20 process constraints. The working group proposal is particularly significant: AI governance and media governance have largely been addressed in separate policy tracks, and a mechanism that treats them as jointly implicated in the information environment would address a structural gap in existing multilateral architecture. For UK-based organisations engaged in international information policy, this brief provides a useful framework for positioning contributions ahead of the Summit.
