Cogitavi commentary

Anthropic's threat intelligence series — alongside analogous publications from OpenAI and Google — represents one of the few systematic sources of primary data on how large language models are actually being used in influence operations and other adversarial contexts. This September 2026 edition documents detected misuse cases, the techniques employed, and the detection and disruption measures applied. The value of these reports lies not in their comprehensiveness — what an AI company can observe is necessarily bounded by what passes through its own systems — but in the specificity of the operational detail they provide, which is rarely available from other sources.

For FIMI analysts, the significance of AI company threat intelligence reports is twofold. First, they track the actual adoption curve of generative AI tools in influence operations, rather than the hypothetical threat curves that characterise much of the academic and policy literature. Second, they document the limitations of AI-assisted manipulation as well as its capabilities — a corrective to both alarmist and dismissive assessments. Read alongside equivalent reports from other AI providers and from platform trust-and-safety teams, Anthropic's series contributes to a more empirically grounded picture of where AI-enabled FIMI currently stands.
